Our Work and Community Involvement
Advent St Nicholas(ASN) is happy to announce that we have just renewed our covenant with the UCC Southern Illinois Conference to accompany each other in our work in Ecuador for another five years. One of the ways we work together is that members of ASN go and build houses with them for Habitat Ecuador.
Many of our members work with service groups or non-governmental organizations in areas that benefit the community at large. For example:
Helen Braun is heavily involved in El Centro Integral de la Familia, a center that provides counseling at low cost to all in need. We also support them directly and indirectly with monetary donations from the congregation.
Michelle Fried, Monica Maher, Gene Braun, and other members of our congregation are involved with the Alternatives to Violence Project, an international volunteer organization that teaches the skills of non-violent interaction to interested groups. In Ecuador the AVP movement has found a ready audience in prisons.
Sheila Leech supports Fundación Jersey, which provides palliative care to improve the quality of life of patients living with cancer and other terminal diseases. An integral part of this care is supporting families through a relative's illness and once bereaved. Support is given to bereaved adults
(spouses, parents and other adult carers), either individually or in group, and bereaved children. Events for children are held annually at Advent-St. Nicholas.
